The Muizenberg Community Kitchen exists to provide nutritious, affordable, plant-based meals to our community. We nurture our kitchen to be a place of diverse learning, sharing, and growth. We collaborate with the Muizenberg Community Garden and local suppliers of ingredients to support our local economy. We build  relationships for future resilience by sustaining our community kitchen.

Our story

2020: in response to COVID-19, as part of the Muizenberg CAN, the Muizenberg community came together to make and serve over 30 000 meals, Monday to Friday for 8 months. This was all made possible by generous donations and volunteers.

n 2021, focus on emergency food security shifted and the Muiz Kitchen needed to navigate with new visions & entrepreneurial arms to sustain. We moved a few times before we found a home opposite the Muizenberg train station at 150 Main Road, Muizenberg.

The dream is to continue…
To continue cooking nutritious food,
building community,
sharing meals together,
learning new skills,
& coming alongside the
most vulnerable in our community.

Our new approach was to start charging for meals – but keeping them as low cost as possible.

Our meals are served at the Muiz Kitchen sit down for R50 and served as takeaways for R15 from the Community Garden. We also had the idea to sell veggie boxes, giving us the power to bulk buy and keep our kitchen stocked. This idea grew into a package free shop where we sell our dry ingredients, and spices, as well as locally made, eco products.

Please join this movement of loving kindness, volunteer, donate or enjoy a delicious meal with us!

What people say about us

“These meals have changed the way I eat” – Customer

“I love the vision of the kitchen, I love working here. Here, we are not judged like we are in other spaces where people look down on us.” –Frank,Volunteer

“I arrived not knowing what to expect and was made warmly welcome from day one. The tasks are many and varied and over the following months I was encouraged to become as involved in the creation of the meals as I felt comfortable with. Cooking in the kitchen is fun and rewarding and I have also learnt a lot about cooking plant based food. The Muiz Kitchen, Coffee Bar and Shop is a warm, dynamic, nurturing, creative and fun place to be! The bonus is a delicious plate of food on the day you volunteer” – Linda,Volunteer
