Documentation

If you are looking for authentic participatory storytelling or documentation, we would be delighted to work with you. We have Participatory Video methodologies at our core, which honour informed consent and the involvement of all parties to tell a story. Using video as a form of documentation allows space for all voices to contribute, regardless of literacy or language. It can be used to promote dialogue around difficult and uncomfortable topics, and to seek solutions to challenges faced by a group or community. If you have a story you would like assistance in telling, or a process you would like documented, we would be delighted to consult with you on the best way forward.

Products include:

  • Short Films (2 min to 10 min)
  • Long Films (15 min to 1 hour)
  • Video Reports
  • Research Assistance
  • Group Storytelling

Creative Harvesting

Claire Homewood (CareCreative) offers visual harvesting to organizations, companies, and educational groups. She will observe workshops, meetings or conferences (online or in person) so as to harvest imagery & ideas. This material can result in illustrations or artworks that assist in reflecting the content back to the participants and beyond. It is also a useful inclusion in report writing.

Claire’s sense for people, local wisdom, and arts is deep with great consciousness for interconnectedness and nature.

She also offers these services:

  • Mural painting in public and private spaces
  • Creative facilitation and participatory processes
  • Illustration
  • Artivism to encourage the discussion around sustainable development
  • Events and festivals: live painting, conscious event management, and community activation

Claire is a Cape Town born artist based in Muizenberg. She is inspired by wild nature and the importance of environmental concerns. Her projects are aligned with the values she cares about – resilience, participation, nurturing integrated, healthy environments & people. Care works between scientists, environmentalists, educators, researchers, and communities to create visual bridges and interactive platforms. She uses creativity to have conversations around important topics, co-designing, and painting public murals.

Networking & Dialogue

We are convinced that if we share our skill sets more widely, we can contribute to more just futures; through sharing our stories and wisdom, we can experience resilient communities.

That’s why we encourage networking spaces where we can connect with one another, get to know community members, meet new people, and potentially ignite new collaborations.

These sessions promote community learning and develop the capacity of individuals to improve their quality of life; and encourage youth participation in community processes.

Join our events:
Our monthly networking sessions usually take place on First Fridays from 4 to 6pm at The Commons (Surfers Corner) in Muizenberg.

Skills Sharing Workshops

How can we share our wisdom and knowledge more evenly, and enable more opportunities for courageous learning?
We are convinced that if we share our skill sets more widely, we can contribute to more just futures; through sharing our stories, knowledge and wisdom, we can experience resilient communities.
Amava Oluntu offers a skills sharing platform for those who want to learn and those who want to share their skills. A lot of people don’t have access to learning opportunities whilst there is a tremendous landscape of knowledge and skills around us. Our platform aims at matching the skill sets and needs available within our community.

How it Works:

1. Propose an offering
What is it that you would like to share with others in a 3 to 4 hour workshop that you think is a useful life skill that promotes creativity, self expression, well-being, and community? Send an email describing this to: bookings@amava.org. We will respond and share the link for step 2.

2. Pick a date
We will share a calendar and google form with you to describe your offering, including a title,
date, time, cost, and venue. Between us, we will create an event invite. We may have suggestions for suitable dates for specific offerings to align them with other learnings taking place at the time, we will communicate that accordingly.

3. Set agreements
We recognise this as a platform that can both enable people to share what they’ve gained through their privilege as a free offering; or as a potential revenue stream where you can charge for your skills and knowledge. These workshops should be accessible to anyone who wants to attend, so we will always make allowance for trade, pay-what-you-can and free attendance. (Arrangement can also be made for transport to and from Vrygrond when requested). Agreement will be set up front on who manages the planning, communications, bookings, and advertising of the workshop.

For paid workshops, 70% of income generated will go to the facilitator/s, and 30% to Amava to sustain the resources, time and costs of this platform. Payment options are cash, eft, or Snapscan.

4. Spread the Word
We advertise the workshop (ideally all involved parties share with their networks) and manage communications / bookings according to the set agreement around this. (We can’t take any responsibility for the success rate of the number of attendees.)

5. Show Up And Do Your Thing

6. Clean Up After
Please return the space to the state it was in when you arrived.
