While it felt like the world fell apart around us, it seemed strange not to leap into action, but in response to the devastation, we committed ourselves to practicing the skills required to rebuild. We slowed down, we looked inward, we reflected on where we wanted to go and how we would get there, we practiced listening, we practiced patience. Still, we wait, and while we wait we gather our energy for what is to come.
We went through two big changes in this time, one was the beginning of the slow transition of Zaid Philander taking over the role of director from Theresa Wigley, which is still in process.
The second big change was the ending of our fiscal hosting relationship with the Muizenberg Community Kitchen in October 2024. This was a result of our differing opinions about the sustainability of their business model and the resulting accumulating debt from the kitchen’s inability to pay the high rental of the building that it occupies. A common problem that many community serving initiatives in Muizenberg (and the world over) face, that needs a lot more creative solution finding to be truly sustainable.
